About the California Notary Exam
The California notary exam is administered by CPS HR Consulting on behalf of the Secretary of State. The exam consists of 45 multiple-choice questions, and you must score at least 70% to pass.
What to Bring to the Exam
- Current government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or state ID)
- Two #2 pencils
- Proof of completed education course (certificate of completion)
- Registration confirmation from CPS HR
Exam Fees
- First-time applicants: $40
- Retake: $20
Walk-ins
Walk-ins are allowed on a space-available basis at most exam locations. Pre-registration through CPS HR is strongly recommended to guarantee a seat.
